GUIDE TO PROFITING (AKA STEALING ITEMS) IN DOTA VERSION 6.71 Introduction As you may or may not have known, courier interactions with enemy fountains have been changed in version 6.71 of DotA in order to discourage item stealing. As of now, forum users are lauding Icefrog's efforts to remove this factor from the game; unfortunately for them, it is still possible, although slightly more difficult now. In this short guide, I will attempt to teach you what I know about how the new fountain interacts with couriers so that you can continue to profit from noobs, nerds, and retards in public games of DotA. IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE General 1. I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY TESTED STEALING ITEMS. I have only tested COURIER MOVEMENTS FROM OUTSIDE THE FOUNTAIN'S RANGE, TO CIRCLES OF POWER, AND FROM THEM. If anyone could confirm whether or not it is still possible to click items on circles of power, I would greatly appreciate it. PLEASE LET ME KNOW. 2. I have ONLY TESTED ITEM STEALING ON THE SCOURGE FOUNTAIN. I only steal items when I am on the Sentinel side because I know nothing about the area around the Sentinel fountain. Sorry if this inconveniences you at all. On Methodology 1. Stealing items is now much more random. I do not know how the interactions are coded, but it seems to me that the fountain now uses invisible projectiles to kill couriers from outside its normal range and vision. It does not dispel the Courier Shield any longer, but instead hits right through it and kills you anyways. It can be verified that the fountain is, in fact, killing your courier in two ways: first, you can have your hero stand idle (using the Stop command) with the courier inside the kill zone, and after the courier is killed, your hero will charge into the enemy spawn zone and attack the fountain; second, you can kill the fountain in -test/-wtf using Maiden to freeze it with Frostbite, and after it dies, couriers will no longer be killed instantly inside the enemy spawn zone. 2. On multiple trials using the same route to steal items from the Scourge fountain, my courier would sometimes die and sometimes survive, and the points at which it died along its path would vary. HOWEVER, I have gotten a semi-consistent route that can be used to steal items with a pretty good success rate. I would say you will succeed more times than you will fail. 3. It is best to steal items with PROPHET, since he can quickly use his Teleport skill to appear at the enemy fountain to pick up items in case anything goes wrong. As always, you should buy a flying courier early on in the match so that you can gain vision of the fountain area and teleport there. Be sure to use the pictures shown later to see where it is safe to place your courier. 4. Since it is now more common for your courier to die in the trees outside of the fountain's regular attack range but inside its courier-only attack range, it can be valuable to buy some TANGOES to cut down the trees close to the circles of power. Six tangoes should do the job; if you need more, then you will probably be killed while you try to recover your booty. 5. It is also wise to bring a Scroll of Teleportation (or Boots of Travel) so that you can quickly escape the angry hordes of noobs who will rage at you after you take their Battlefury components. This is assuming your crow died, of course. 6. I will add exact information about stealing items once it is confirmed that items can still be clicked on circles of power. For now, I will assume you can steal items the same way as always and just say that while it is DIFFICULT to click items on circles of power, it is definitely possible and you should practice to get good at it. Be sure you shift queue your move and pick-up commands so that your courier moves at optimal speed, as it's now more important than ever to be as fast as possible. 7. Try to keep your courier in the fog as much as possible. As I stated in point 1, it seems to be random whether or not your courier is killed by the fountain, but I've found that it takes the fountain consistently longer to kill your courier if it's in the fog. To test this yourself, try approaching the fountain straight over the fence with your Courier Shield up; you won't last long. Pictures To Show Boundaries     Conclusion Item stealing may be hated by a lot of people, but it is nevertheless a creative way to throw discord into the enemy team's strategy in public games. In addition, it's pretty easily preventable, so people who whine about it really don't have any reason to do so. The information in this guide has resulted from only a couple hours of testing, so I apologize if some parts are vague. Please let me know if there's any information I have misexplained, muddled, or omitted and I will update. The Profiteers must stick together in order to perfect their methods and crush the opposition. Thanks to phoenix for introducing me to the ways of the profit. DOUBLE-POST-WORTHY PROFIT TRICK #1 1. Pick Riki, Techies, PL, or another invis hero of your choice 2. Buy 'n' fly your crow to opponent's fountain, making sure to keep it outside the kill zone 3. Buy 6 branches or however many are needed to fill the crow's inventory 4. Buy a gem, which will appear in your circle of power at your base and deplete the enemy's gem stock.
